Partnership will bring more lifestyle content to ChatGPT
OpenAI has secured a licensing deal with Dotdash Meredith, the People magazine publisher, that will integrate its content into ChatGPT and assist in training the tech startup’s AI models. Announced on Tuesday, the partnership allows OpenAI to display Dotdash Meredith’s extensive lifestyle and entertainment content across its chatbot from one of the largest digital and print publishers in the US.
Dotdash Meredith, a subsidiary of Barry Diller’s IAC Inc., will also leverage OpenAI’s models to enhance its advertising targeting tool. Though the financial terms were not disclosed, the collaboration will give ChatGPT access to trusted information from Dotdash Meredith’s leading brands, such as People, Food & Wine, Better Homes & Gardens, InStyle, Southern Living, and Real Simple.
Barry Diller, IAC’s CEO, has been outspoken about the potential impact of generative AI on the publishing industry. At a summit last year, he warned that this technology could pose a serious threat, saying, “If all the world’s information is able to be sucked up in this maw, and then essentially repackaged in declarative sentences in what’s called chat but isn’t chat… there will be no publishing.”
Despite his initial concerns, IAC-controlled Dotdash Meredith has now struck a deal with OpenAI to license its content and collaborate on new AI-driven products. Dotdash Meredith’s CEO, Neil Vogel, emphasized the importance of ensuring proper attribution and compensation for publishers’ content. “We have not been shy about the fact that AI platforms should pay publishers for their content and that content must be appropriately attributed,” Vogel said. “This deal is a testament to the great work OpenAI is doing on both fronts to partner with creators and publishers and ensure a healthy internet for the future.”
OpenAI’s COO Brad Lightcap expressed excitement about the partnership, saying, “We’re thrilled to partner with Dotdash Meredith to bring its trusted brands to ChatGPT and to explore new approaches in advancing the publishing and marketing industries.”
In addition to integrating Dotdash Meredith’s content into ChatGPT, the partnership will allow Dotdash Meredith to use OpenAI’s technology to improve its cookieless ad-targeting solution and develop new AI products for its audience.
The collaboration with Dotdash Meredith is one of several recent partnerships that OpenAI has formed with publishers. Similar deals have been made with Axel Springer and the Financial Times, reinforcing OpenAI’s commitment to expanding its information sources and ensuring quality content for its AI platforms.
