Anthropic, one of the notable competitors to OpenAI, announced its latest and most advanced artificial intelligence model, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, on Thursday. This new model is a significant addition to the landscape of popular chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Founded by former OpenAI research executives, Anthropic boasts notable backers such as Google, Salesforce, and Amazon, and has secured approximately $7.3 billion through five different funding deals over the past year.

The release of Claude 3.5 Sonnet follows Anthropic’s introduction of the Claude 3 family of models in March and OpenAI’s launch of GPT-4o in May. According to the company, Claude 3.5 Sonnet surpasses its predecessor, Claude 3 Opus, in speed and is the premier model from the new Claude 3.5 family. Users can access Claude 3.5 Sonnet for free via the company’s website, Claude.ai, and through the Claude iPhone app. Subscribers to Claude Pro and Team can enjoy the latest model with higher rate limits.
“It shows marked improvement in grasping nuance, humor, and complex instructions, and is exceptional at writing high-quality content with a natural, relatable tone,” the company stated in a blog post. Additionally, it has capabilities in writing, editing, and executing code.
Anthropic also introduced “Artifacts,” a feature that enables users to request Claude to generate text documents or code, which then opens in a dedicated window. “This creates a dynamic workspace where they can see, edit, and build upon Claude’s creations in real-time,” the company explained. They expect Artifacts to be valuable for tasks such as code development, legal contract drafting and analysis, and business report writing.
As the generative AI industry gains momentum, startups like Anthropic and OpenAI, along with tech giants like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta, are in a competitive race to integrate advanced AI technologies. This competition aims to capture a share of a market that is projected to surpass $1 trillion in revenue within the next decade.
In related news, Anthropic recently unveiled its first-ever enterprise offering, Team, in May. This service, designed for businesses, was developed over several quarters and tested with 30 to 50 customers across various industries, including technology, financial services, legal services, and healthcare. Co-founder Daniela Amodei shared that the enterprise product was developed in response to customer demand for a dedicated solution. “So much of what we were hearing from enterprise businesses is people are kind of using Claude at the office already,” Amodei remarked.
Following the launch of this new product, Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger joined Anthropic as chief product officer. During his tenure at Instagram, Krieger, the former chief technology officer of the Meta-owned platform, expanded its user base to 1 billion and grew its engineering team to over 450. Additionally, OpenAI’s former safety leader Jan Leike joined Anthropic in May.
