At the recent WWDC 2024, Apple introduced its latest innovation, Apple Intelligence, and announced a significant partnership that integrates ChatGPT with Siri through a collaboration with OpenAI. During a post-keynote discussion, SVP Craig Federighi revealed that Apple plans to expand its partnerships to include other third-party models, hinting at potential collaborations beyond OpenAI.
“We’re looking forward to doing integrations with other models, including Google Gemini, for instance, in the future,” said Federighi. He noted that while there were no immediate announcements, this direction reflects the company’s broader strategic vision.
The integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT with Siri marks the first third-party AI model to be incorporated into Apple’s ecosystem, scheduled for later this year. Apple assured that users would access ChatGPT seamlessly through Siri without the necessity of an external account or incurring additional charges.
Federighi further explained the operational nuances of the integration within iOS 18. “Now you can do it right through Siri, without going through another tool,” he stated. “Siri, it’s really important to understand, will ask you before you go to ChatGPT. Then you can have that conversation with ChatGPT. Then, if there’s any helpful data referenced in your question that you might want to supply to ChatGPT, we’re going to ask, ‘Do you want to send this photo?’ From a privacy point of view, you’re always in control and have total transparency.”
